Do you know how many people visit your website?

It seems incredible that companies will spend significant sums of money on their web presence, yet never ask the question. Just how effective has it been. All  other marketing campaigns are measured and yet many lack an effective means of making an accurate judgement on how successful they are. The web offers a real and constantly updating feedback mechanism which provides details of the number of visitors to a site and what they are looking at.

For example, were you aware that the following data should be easily accessible to you on your website?

  • How many visits to the site on a daily, weekly or monthly basis?
  • How many unique visitors, in other words, showing how many returned to your site after their first visit.
  • Which was the most popular page on your site?
  • How many pages did the average visitor look at?
  • How did they find your site and if they came from a search engine, which keywords did they enter?

Finally, armed with this information you should be able to calculate the conversion rate of your site. If your site does not sell items, but just generates leads or enquiries, you should measure it in terms of the number of visits per enquiry. Or if you are running an e-commerce site the number of visits per sale, or visits per £500 of sales.

Now, ask yourself, were you aware this was possible? Do you know what the conversion rate of your site is?

If your web host is not able to provide this information, you should take a look at Google Analytics, it offers very comprehensive data and best of all it is free. All you need is for your website provider to add a small piece of code to the site.
